Lagos Upgrades Olusosun Disposal Facility as LAWMA, Zoomlion Boost Waste Management Infrastructure
The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), in partnership with Zoomlion Nigeria Limited, has commissioned the rehabilitated Road E and newly upgraded disposal platforms at the Olusosun Disposal Facility, marking another milestone in the state’s drive to modernise waste management infrastructure and promote environmental sustainability.
The project, delivered by Zoomlion Nigeria Limited as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, is expected to improve operational efficiency, enhance access for waste collection vehicles and strengthen Lagos State’s commitment to building a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, described the project as a strategic investment that will significantly improve operations at one of the state’s largest waste disposal facilities.
According to him, the rehabilitation of Road E and the construction of modern disposal platforms will facilitate easier movement of waste collection trucks within the facility, reduce turnaround time, increase disposal capacity and improve overall service delivery.
Dr. Gbadegesin disclosed that the intervention also forms part of the state’s long-term transition plan ahead of the eventual closure of the Olusosun Disposal Facility.
He explained that the closure process would commence upon the completion of the Transfer Loading Station (TLS) and Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), both currently being developed by Zoomlion Nigeria Limited to support a more efficient and sustainable waste processing system.
The LAWMA boss noted that the completion of the new facilities would accelerate Lagos State’s transition from a landfill-dependent waste disposal system to a resource recovery-driven model centred on recycling, waste diversion and the principles of a circular economy.
He commended Zoomlion Nigeria Limited for undertaking the rehabilitation of Road E under its Corporate Social Responsibility programme and also praised the Authority’s Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators and other stakeholders for their continued collaboration in advancing environmental sustainability across Lagos State.
Dr. Gbadegesin further stated that the project reflects the commitment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration to expanding critical environmental infrastructure capable of meeting the demands of a rapidly growing megacity while improving sanitation, public health and environmental resilience.
He reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to implementing innovative and sustainable waste management solutions, assuring residents that the state government remains focused on delivering a cleaner, healthier and more environmentally sustainable Lagos.
In her remarks, the Managing Director of Zoomlion Nigeria Limited, Mrs. Habiba Abubakar, announced that the rehabilitation project was completed within 26 days, ahead of schedule.
She described the upgraded access road and newly constructed disposal platforms as the first phase of a strategic partnership between Zoomlion and LAWMA aimed at strengthening waste management infrastructure across Lagos State.
Mrs. Abubakar reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting the Lagos State Government through the execution of additional infrastructure projects designed to improve waste collection, transportation and disposal systems while enhancing the efficiency of environmental sanitation operations across the state.
Also speaking at the event, the President of the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWAMN), Dr. Olugbenga Adebola, commended the Lagos State Government, LAWMA and Zoomlion Nigeria Limited for delivering what he described as a critical intervention in the state’s waste management sector.
He noted that improved access to waste disposal facilities remains essential for seamless and efficient refuse evacuation across Lagos.
According to him, the reconstructed access road and newly established disposal platforms will significantly reduce operational challenges faced by Private Sector Participant operators, shorten turnaround time for compactor trucks and improve the efficiency of waste evacuation services.
Dr. Adebola expressed confidence that continued investment in Transfer Loading Stations, modern waste disposal infrastructure and other environmental initiatives would further strengthen Lagos State’s waste management framework, improve operational efficiency and support LAWMA’s long-term vision of achieving a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment for all residents.
