World Hepatitis Day 2026: The Legends Intensifies Campaign Against Silent Killer, Urges Nigerians To Get Tested
As the world marks World Hepatitis Day 2026, The Legends Support 4 Community Initiative has intensified its campaign against viral hepatitis, calling on Nigerians to embrace regular screening, vaccination and early treatment as effective measures to combat the life-threatening disease.
The non-governmental organisation made the call in a statement signed by its President, Sulaimon Ijaoba, to commemorate this year’s World Hepatitis Day observed globally on July 28.
According to the organisation, viral hepatitis remains one of the most dangerous but neglected public health challenges worldwide, with millions of people unknowingly living with hepatitis B and C because the disease often develops without obvious symptoms.
The group noted that delayed diagnosis has continued to contribute to severe complications such as liver cirrhosis, liver failure and liver cancer, stressing that early detection remains the most effective way to reduce mortality associated with the disease.
Speaking on the significance of the global health campaign, The Legends stated that knowledge, prevention and early diagnosis remain humanity’s strongest defence against viral hepatitis.
The organisation therefore encouraged Nigerians to know their hepatitis status through routine medical screening, receive hepatitis B vaccination where applicable, maintain healthy lifestyles and support efforts aimed at eliminating discrimination against persons living with hepatitis.
As part of activities commemorating the 2026 World Hepatitis Day, The Legends disclosed that it is embarking on extensive community sensitisation programmes, awareness campaigns and advocacy initiatives designed to educate residents on the importance of hepatitis prevention and access to quality healthcare.
The NGO also urged government institutions, healthcare providers, development partners and community leaders to strengthen existing public health interventions by expanding access to affordable hepatitis testing, vaccination and treatment services across the country, particularly for vulnerable communities.
Reaffirming its commitment to preventive healthcare, The Legends pledged to continue implementing programmes that promote healthy living, community education and improved healthcare access, while calling on every Nigerian to take action by getting tested, vaccinated and encouraging others to do the same.
