Tree Planting Is Everyone’s Responsibility, Says Akinpelu
The Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Hon. Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson, has urged residents to embrace tree planting as a shared responsibility in building a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment.
He made the call on Tuesday during the 2026 Annual Tree Planting Exercise held in Alimosho as part of the statewide celebration of Lagos State Tree Planting Day.
Speaking at the event, Akinpelu described the annual exercise as a key component of the Lagos State Government’s environmental sustainability agenda and a practical response to the growing effects of climate change.
He noted that tree planting is more than a ceremonial exercise, stressing that trees improve air quality, absorb carbon dioxide, prevent soil erosion, reduce extreme heat and help mitigate flooding within communities.
The chairman recalled that the Annual Tree Planting Day was introduced in 2008 by former Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, and has since become a major environmental initiative encouraging residents to participate actively in protecting the environment.
Speaking on the theme of this year’s exercise, “Trees for Lagos: Our City, Our Responsibility,” Akinpelu said environmental protection requires collective effort and should not be left to government alone.
He called on residents, schools, religious organisations, community groups and corporate bodies to plant, nurture and protect trees within their communities.
The council chairman reaffirmed Alimosho Local Government’s commitment to supporting the environmental policies of the Lagos State Government through sustained tree planting campaigns, environmental sanitation programmes and public awareness initiatives.
He expressed confidence that greater community participation would help preserve the ecosystem and ensure a healthier, safer and more sustainable Alimosho for both present and future generations.
