Reno Omokri Replies Davido After ‘Bingo’ Remark
Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has responded to singer Davido after the music star referred to him as “Bingo” in a social media post.
The exchange followed comments made by Omokri regarding Davido’s decision to wear a customised jacket bearing the names of abducted Oyo schoolchildren during an appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Davido, reacting to Omokri’s criticism, took to social media with a brief but pointed response, describing the former presidential aide as “Umu Bingo” and using additional derogatory language.
Responding on Tuesday, Omokri shared screenshots of the singer’s comments on his Instagram page, expressing surprise at the reaction.
“Dear Mr David Adeleke, AKA Davido, thank you for your feedback. I was rather surprised by your response to my post. Most shocking is your insult,” Omokri wrote.
He noted that he expected a more measured response from an international music star, adding that public insults were beneath someone of Davido’s status and influence.
Omokri explained that his earlier criticism stemmed from concerns that highlighting the names of abducted schoolchildren on a global stage could inadvertently give publicity to criminal groups responsible for such acts.
According to him, while Davido’s intentions may have been noble, the action could unintentionally amplify fear and draw attention to terrorist and bandit groups.
“I did that because while your intention may be good and you think you are pressuring the government, the actual effect of what you did is to give publicity to the terrorists and help them spread fear, recruit new members and raise funds,” he stated.
Omokri also suggested that Davido may have felt encouraged to defend his actions after receiving support from political figures, including Peter Obi.
Drawing a comparison, Omokri pointed to popular American streamer IShowSpeed, who attended the same World Cup event and used the opportunity to promote Nigeria positively by wearing the country’s jersey and speaking favourably about the nation.
The disagreement has sparked debate online, with supporters of both personalities divided over whether international platforms should be used to draw attention to security challenges or to promote Nigeria’s positive image abroad.
