The Lagos State Government has intensified its social intervention efforts, announcing that nearly 12,000 vulnerable residents have received over N4.6 billion in financial support under the Eko Cares Financial Assistance Programme since 2020.

The revelation was made during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing in Alausa, Ikeja, where the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Dr. Afolabi Tajudeen, highlighted the state’s growing commitment to easing the burden of economic hardship on struggling households.

According to Tajudeen, a total of 11,991 residents have benefited from the programme, which assists in medical treatment, education, housing, business support, and emergency welfare needs. He added that the state government has earmarked another N3.14 billion in the 2026 budget to sustain and widen the initiative.

The government official disclosed that within the last year alone, 3,301 residents received over N2.13 billion in aid, targeting elderly citizens, students, persons living with disabilities, widows, small business owners, and indigent families across the state.

He stressed that women, senior citizens, and people living with disabilities remain key priorities under the intervention scheme, noting that the administration is determined to strengthen social protection systems amid rising living costs.

Tajudeen also revealed that the Mother, Infant and Child Development Programme has continued to provide nutritional support for pregnant women and nursing mothers. About 2,315 pregnant women reportedly benefited during the latest cycle, bringing the total number of beneficiaries since inception to 8,595. More than N641 million has been committed to maternal healthcare and nutrition support initiatives.

In a separate relief effort aimed at cushioning the effects of inflation and food insecurity, the Lagos State Government distributed 20,000 food packs across all 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas, reaching an estimated 100,000 vulnerable residents statewide.

The briefing further showcased the government’s push for stronger civic participation through voter education campaigns, governance sensitisation programmes, and the CitizensGate digital feedback platform, which has now attracted over 750,000 registered users.

Officials say the programmes form part of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s broader strategy to promote inclusive governance and improve the welfare of residents facing economic challenges in Africa’s largest city.
