Chrisland Students Get Civic Lesson in Eti-Osa Council Visit
The Chrisland Schools has taken learning beyond the classroom as students embarked on an educational visit to the Eti-Osa Local Government, gaining practical exposure to how grassroots governance operates in one of the most active local council areas in Lagos.
The visit, which brought together a large group of pupils dressed in their school uniforms, was part of a civic education initiative aimed at deepening students’ understanding of public administration and encouraging early awareness of governance structures.
The students were received at the council secretariat by the Executive Chairman, Adeola Adetoro, alongside key officials, including the Supervisory Councillor for Education, Rasheed Abolore Olusesi, and other council representatives who welcomed the delegation led by Mr. Willson Udeme.
During the interactive session, the pupils were introduced to the core functions of local government administration, ranging from basic infrastructure planning and environmental sanitation to education support, community development, and public service delivery. Officials explained how decisions are made at the grassroots level and how local councils serve as the closest tier of government to the people.
The council leadership also used the opportunity to emphasise the importance of civic responsibility, encouraging the students to develop a sense of participation, accountability, and leadership from an early age. The engagement featured guided explanations of administrative units and how public resources are managed to support communities.
Such educational excursions are increasingly being adopted by schools across Nigeria as part of experiential learning, a method widely recognised in civic education for helping students connect theoretical knowledge with real-world governance systems.
At the end of the visit, the students expressed excitement over the opportunity to see government in action, describing the experience as eye-opening and inspiring. Teachers accompanying the group noted that the visit would strengthen classroom lessons on social studies and government, while also helping to nurture future leaders.
The programme reflects a broader push across local governments in Lagos State to strengthen civic awareness among young people, ensuring that the next generation grows up with a clearer understanding of how public institutions function and how citizens can actively contribute to community development.
