Authorities and stakeholders in the Epe axis of Lagos are ramping up efforts to curb the rising incidence of truck-related accidents along the busy Lekki–Epe corridor, following renewed safety concerns triggered by recent fatal crashes involving articulated vehicles.

The Lekki–Epe Expressway, a key economic artery linking industrial zones, residential developments, and the Lekki Free Trade Zone, has witnessed increasing pressure from heavy-duty truck movements, raising alarm over road safety, congestion, and traffic discipline.

In response, transport regulators, safety agencies, and community stakeholders are reviewing a range of measures aimed at reducing crash risks and improving traffic flow. These include tighter enforcement of vehicle regulations, stricter monitoring of truck operations, and enhanced coordination among relevant transport unions.

The renewed safety push follows a series of incidents that have resulted in loss of lives and injuries, reigniting public concern over driver behaviour, vehicle roadworthiness, and the adequacy of existing enforcement mechanisms on the axis.

Safety advocates have also called for urgent upgrades in emergency response capacity along the corridor, alongside sustained road safety education targeted at commercial drivers who frequently operate heavy-duty vehicles in the area.

Proposals under consideration reportedly include restricting truck movement during peak traffic hours, improving junction management, and deploying more active patrol and surveillance systems to ensure compliance with traffic laws.

Officials say the broader objective is to restore confidence in the corridor as a safe and efficient transport route, especially as Epe continues to grow as a strategic gateway within Lagos’ expanding eastern development belt.

Stakeholders remain optimistic that with stronger enforcement, better coordination, and sustained infrastructure improvements, the axis can significantly reduce accidents and support safer, more reliable movement for commuters and businesses alike.
