Lagos Reaffirms Law on Gated Streets as Residents Call for Stronger Enforcement
By Emmanuel Daniji
The Lagos State Government has reiterated that its existing law regulating the operation of gated streets across the state remains valid and enforceable, amid growing public concern over widespread non-compliance.
According to the directive, gates on streets are to be opened daily from 5:00am to 11:00pm to ensure the free flow of traffic, enhance public safety, protect lives and property, and support ease of doing business. Authorities warned that any street found in violation risks the removal of such gates.
The clarification has sparked fresh reactions from residents across Lagos, many of whom acknowledge the law but question its enforcement.
Reacting to the update, Ruqoyah Adebola welcomed the information but raised concerns about accountability.
Another resident, Adegbite John Adeniran, described the trend as increasingly common across the city.
Skepticism about enforcement was echoed by Sa Kossy, who questioned the government’s commitment to implementation.
Others, including Adeniyi Jelili Adediran, also demanded clarity on reporting channels, asking for official telephone numbers to contact when violations occur.
As Lagos continues to grapple with traffic congestion, urban expansion, and security concerns, residents are calling on the state government to move beyond reaffirming laws and demonstrate firm, transparent enforcement to restore public confidence and ensure shared access to public roads.
For now, the law stands—but public attention is firmly fixed on whether action will follow.
