Algeria captain, Riyad Mahrez has announced that the 2025 Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco will be his last.

The 34 year old had an illustrious career leading the Dessert Warriors to the 2019 AFCON win.

The former Manchester City winger said winning the 2025 AFCON will be a huge addition to his career.

Mahrez believes the AFCON has been a big motivation to players of Africa descent as he confirmed the 2025 AFCON will be his last reason why he wants to give his best against Nigeria in the quarter final.

“It means a lot, because we won one with the generation we had before,” Mahrez said.

“Every big competition you start, for players, is a big motivation. Of course I want to do well. I think it will be my last African Cup Of Nations so I don’t want to project myself too much and too far.

“That’s why I want to concentrate and focus on the game of tomorrow. I will give everything because it’s really important for us to do something, for us, for our country, for our supporters, and for our families.”

Mahrez has scored three goals in four appearances in the 2025 AFCON as the Dessert Warriors clash with Super Eagles at the quarter final at the Stade de Marrakech on Saturday, December 10.
