A Lagos-based professional has reported the disappearance of his car just four days after hiring a new driver, raising renewed concerns about the risks associated with employing domestic and personal staff in the city.

The driver, whose identity has not yet been publicly disclosed, was reportedly entrusted with the vehicle for routine errands shortly after starting work. When the car failed to return and repeated phone calls went unanswered, the employer alerted authorities. Investigators later found that the driver’s mobile phone had been switched off.

Police spokespersons confirmed that an investigation is ongoing. Early findings suggest the suspect may have used falsified references during the hiring process, a growing tactic among fraudsters seeking quick access to valuable property. Law enforcement officers have circulated details of the missing vehicle and are working with tracking specialists to locate it.

“This is a stark reminder for residents to exercise caution when hiring domestic staff,” said a police source involved in the case. “Verifying credentials and conducting thorough background checks are critical, especially when access to high-value property is involved.”

The incident has drawn attention to the increasing number of similar thefts in Lagos, highlighting the vulnerability of households and businesses to driver-related fraud and opportunistic crimes. Authorities are urging employers to report any suspicious activity immediately and remain vigilant while investigations continue.
