Passengers Dies After Auto Crash In Ikorodu
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported that the accident occurred opposite the MRS Filling Station in the early hours of the morning.
Officials said the crash involved a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number EPE 494 XM and a stationary tipper truck.
According to LASTMA, preliminary findings indicated that the commercial bus suffered an abrupt brake failure.
The driver was alleged to have been travelling at excessive speed when he lost control of the vehicle.
The bus then rammed into the tipper truck, which had been parked by the roadside for diesel purchase.
LASTMA confirmed that an adult female passenger died on the spot from the impact.
Five female passengers and one male occupant sustained serious, life-threatening injuries.
Emergency responders rushed the injured victims to Benic Special Hospital, officials said.
The body of the deceased woman was taken by security personnel to General Hospital, Ikorodu, for formal documentation.
LASTMA said the tipper truck driver attempted to flee after the crash.
Traffic officers pursued the driver in what the agency described as a spirited chase.
The driver was eventually apprehended by LASTMA personnel.
The driver of the commercial bus was also arrested at the scene.
Both men were handed over to the Ipakodo Police Division for further investigation.
LASTMA personnel later cleared the wreckage to restore normal traffic flow toward the Ikorodu Garage corridor.
The agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow over the incident.
He offered condolences to the family of the deceased passenger.
Bakare-Oki also wished the injured travellers a quick recovery.
He urged motorists to avoid speeding, warning that excessive speed limits a driver’s ability to respond to sudden mechanical failures or hazards.
