Police Arraign Pastor Over Sexual Indecence On A Child
By Felix Kuyinu
A cleric, Bashorun Akanni, has been arraigned in court for an alleged sexual indecent treatment on a minor after his arraignment in court.
Akanni, of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, who also is a legal practitioner was accused of committing the offence on a 14-year-old girl as claimed by the prosecutor, Funmilola Aluko while speaking to the Presiding Judge, Hakeem Oshodi, at the High Court in Ikeja.
Aluko said that the suspect, who is on a count charge of indecent treatment of a child, fondled the breasts of the teenager at the Iwaya area of Lagos and thereby contravened Section 135 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge after which the defence counsel, Morenikeji Oyekunle, prayed the court to allow her client continue on the bail earlier granted, arguing that he had complied with all conditions and was not a flight risk, being a lawyer and clergyman.
In reaction, the prosecutor opposed the bail request, urging the court to review the terms of release.
In his ruling, Justice Oshodi upheld the bail conditions previously granted and directed the defence counsel to ensure the defendant’s presence at every adjourned date.
The matter would be revisited in court on December 9.
