Tension is simmering in Epe Kingdom following the passing of Oba Shefiu Olatunji Adewale, as rival factions spar over who should ascend the revered Olu-Epe throne.

What began as whispers of succession has grown into a public tug-of-war between High Chiefs Adeniyi Kadri Odedeogboro and Iskilu Olajide Ikuforiji—two powerful contenders whose ambitions have split opinions across the historic Lagos community.

Sensing the risk of unrest, respected voices have stepped forward to steady the ship. Barrister Omodele Ibrahim, President of the influential Epe Ogunmodede Club and Alakoso of Epe Kingdom, took the podium at the King Kosoko Memorial Lecture in Lagos to make an impassioned appeal for calm.

Drawing on the legacy of the legendary King Kosoko, Ibrahim reminded his audience that Epe’s strength has always been its unity. “Let us honor our ancestors not with strife but with the courage, culture, and love they embodied,” he urged.

His message was echoed by the Baamofin of Epe Kingdom, Barrister Tunde Seriki, who warned that the community’s centuries-old harmony must not be sacrificed for the throne. High Chief Wale Mogaji added that moments like these test the character of a people and praised the memorial event for rekindling Epe’s shared identity.

Authorities are already moving to prevent violence. Epe Local Government Chairperson Surah Animashaun has suspended any installation activities for a new Olu and even canceled large public religious gatherings—including Eid-al-Kabir celebrations—to reduce tensions. The Lagos State Government, now actively mediating, is expected to ensure that due process determines the rightful successor.

For many in Epe, the dispute is more than a royal succession—it is a test of the kingdom’s enduring spirit. As residents wait for an official resolution, leaders like Ibrahim are betting that dialogue, patience, and a shared sense of heritage will keep Epe’s proud traditions intact.
