Lagos State has officially been announced as the first African city to host the E1 Racing Championship, a global electric boat racing series, scheduled to hold on October 4th and 5th, 2025.

Echonews reports that the announcement followed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s weekend visit to Monaco, where the latest stage of the E1 Championship took place.

Sanwo-Olu described the experience as a strong reminder of how bold ideas and innovation can transform the future of clean energy and transportation.

The governor expressed pride in Lagos clinching the hosting rights, stating that the event puts the city at the centre of global clean energy conversations.

He noted that Lagos’ inclusion is proof that the city is ready for sustainable innovation and marine technology on a global scale.

“This is an opportunity to show the world what makes Lagos special — our culture, our energy, and our people,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He explained that the October event is a chance for Lagos to welcome global visitors, share its stories, and highlight its growing tourism and tech sectors.

Sanwo-Olu also acknowledged the crucial support of Afreximbank, which is partnering with Team Drogba and backing Lagos’ vision.

He said the bank’s role is not only financial but a reflection of confidence in the state’s potential to lead in innovation.

The governor added that hosting the E1 event marks a new chapter for Lagos in global sports and clean marine transportation.

He explained that the initiative aligns with the state’s sustainability goals and efforts to build a greener future.

“The world will see Lagos not just as a megacity, but as a pioneer in environmental responsibility and marine innovation,” he said.

The E1 Championship features electric-powered RaceBird boats and aims to inspire a shift toward clean oceans and sustainable transport.

With the countdown underway, Lagos is already making preparations to ensure a world-class event in October.
