Man Gets Life Imprisonment For Child Rape

Alani Rafiu has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Ikeja Sexual Offence and Domestic Violence Court for defiling a 14-year-old girl whose Identity is not disclosed.

According to Justice Rahman Oshodi, the prosecution successfully proved every requirement of defilement in the case against Rafiu.

He stated that the convict’s action demonstrated a reckless disregard for secular and spiritual principles. Also, he said the convict’s crime is extremely serious and his action is inexcusable because he violated the trust of people who trusted him as a religious leader and family friend.

The evidence presented in court revealed that the convict’s actions show a clear intent to manipulate and exploit.

The court ruled that the convict intentionally isolated the victim, took advantage of her vulnerability and bribed her into silence.

“You betrayed the trust placed in you as a religious instructor and family friend.” The judge said.

Justice Oshodi said there was convincing proof showing that the victim was a child and it was evident from various sources.

The victim gave a clear and detailed account of being sexually abused by the convict. Medical records confirmed this account showing physical evidence of penetration.

The court stated that places of worship should be safe spaces for spiritual growth, not places where children are exploited.

“The prosecution gave evidence that the defendant had sex with her three times on the mosque.” Justice Oshodi said.

The court convicted the Rafiu, and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Also, the court gave order that the convict’s name should be registered in the Sexual Offences Register as maintained by the Lagos State Government.

Three witnesses were called by the State Counsel, which is led by Babajide Boye, through whom several documents were tendered while the convict testified as a sole witness

The offence violates section 137 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos state.

The prosecution stated that the convict committed the crime in Ikotun, Lagos on August 17, 2021.
