MSSN sensitises residents on health ahead Ramadan fasting

As Muslim fasting period approaches, a religious body, the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Ejigbo branch has educated the Muslims on proper maintenance of their health iduring the period. .

According to the body, there is need for such programme whenever Ramadan approaches in order to reduce the rate of unhealthy Muslims and keep them fit to observe the compulsory fasting.

Speaking on the topic “Healthy Living: A tool for healthy Ramadan”, a medical practitioner, Doctor A. M. Bamiro while citing quotes from the holy Qur’an cautioned that believers should restrain from being the architect of their own misfortune, emphasising that taking care of themselves should be a top priority even without the obligations of fasting in the holy month.

He advised residents to avoid taking harmful fats, eat healthy food, drink safe water, avoid smoking, do regular check-up and many more to ensure healthy living.

“I believe without thinking of our religious obligations as Muslims, the simplest saying of health is wealth should be a motto we uphold strictly as humans because we really can’t achieve much if we are not strong. In fact, there is a hadith of the prophet (SAW) which proves that Allah loves a strong believer than a weak one. Allah also says in Q2:195 that ‘And make not your own hands contribute to your own destruction.’

“Not only that, we have even been cautioned to avoid eating excessively which is a good means of diet as Islam has the prescription of medical practitioners long time ago on how a good diet can be reached. Q20:81 says: ‘Eat and drink, but avoid excess’.

Also educating residents on their diets, a nutritionist, Hajia Sururah Jafar, prescribed nutritional diets that can be taken to moderate food consumption during the fasting period.

She said it is expected that residents start adjusting their food intake as this is a very important factor that they neglect every year which is what affects their stability during the fasting period.

“It is expected that people consider their health conditions and consult health care provider for medication or diet adjustment.

“For now, they, especially the Muslims, need to reduce their food intake and increase their fluid intake then they should prepare meal plan while making it simple and balanced,” she said.
