Nigeria couldn’t live up to expectations as they played a painful 1-1 draw against South Africa to extend their winless run in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers to three matches.

Finidi George started his reign with a drab draw while refusing to introduce Victor Boniface in the game.

The Eagles failed to light up the Godswill Akpabio stadium, Uyo in the first 45 minutes while struggling to create magic in the game.

Themba Zwane stunned Nigeria to give the Bayana Bayana the lead from close finish in the 29th minute.

The goal spurred the Eagles to improve their performance in the game as they finally got the equalizer off the boot of young dynamic midfielder, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru who was assisted by Alex Iwobi.

The equalizer didn’t stop Nigeria from pressing more to find the winner as Ademola Lookman also saw his effort at goal off the goal post.

Terem Moffi had the chance to win the game for the Super Eagles before the sound of the whistle but he couldn’t get on the score sheet from close range.

Nigeria will face Benin Republic in their next game at the Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny, Abidjan on Monday, June 10.

Wallowing in the fifth position on the World Cup qualifying group, the Eagles would have to defeat South Africa and at least win their next two matches.
