Following recent tragic incidents of stampede in Ibadan, Oyo State; Okija, Anambra State; and Holy Trinity Catholic Church, FCT, Abuja, where lives were lost due to stampede at events involving the distribution of free items, the Executive Chairman of Oshodi-Isolo Local Government, Otunba Kehinde Almoroof Oloyede, has issued a cautionary note to residents to avoid large gatherings as a precautionary step against stampede.
In a statement released by his media office on Saturday, Oloyede expressed deep concern over the safety of residents during large gatherings, particularly events involving the sharing of palliatives or free items.
The council boss urged parents to closely monitor their children during the festive season and advised residents to be vigilant and orderly in such situations.
Acknowledging the goodwill of individuals, organizations, and religious groups that often distribute items during the Yuletide, the chairman stressed the need for proper planning and involvement of security agencies to avoid overcrowding and potential disasters.
He emphasized that organizers of such events should; coordinate with appropriate authorities; ensure venues have multiple entry and exit points; choose well-ventilated and spacious locations for gatherings.
The chairman also appealed to beneficiaries to remain orderly and adhere strictly to the instructions of event organizers to prevent chaos.
In view of the above and the need to prevent large gatherings, the usual Yuletide giveaway that the council chairman is known for will not be shared through CDC and other stakeholders but channel through an easy access that will prevent residents from struggling before getting the items.
Reiterating his administration’s commitment to the safety of lives and property, Oloyede said, “I read with sadness about the recent incidents in Ibadan, Anambra, and FCT where many lives were lost in stampedes. To avoid such tragedies in our local government, I urge all individuals and organizations planning giveaways to engage professional event planners and prioritize crowd control. We want a safe and joyful festive season for everyone in Oshodi-Isolo, we will continue to do our best in providing adequate security for our people at all times.”
He concluded by wishing residents a peaceful and prosperous Christmas and New Year celebrations in advance.
