In commemoration of World Teachers Day, the Progressives Teachers’ Movement, an integral part of the Nigeria Union of Teachers Oshodi-Isolo branch, organized a three-day program that commenced on Thursday, October 3rd, 2024, and concluded on Saturday, October 5th, 2024. The event highlighted the significance of teachers worldwide and emphasized the need to value their impact on the lives of the children they teach, in line with the theme “Valuing Teachers’ Voices Towards a New Social Contract for Education.”
President of the Progressive Teachers Movement (PTM) Alhaji Kayode Akinmade, Grandmaster highlighted the crucial roles that teachers play globally and the importance of acknowledging their invaluable contributions to the development of education and shaping the lives of future generations.
He further called for a renewed social contract that places greater emphasis on the voices and needs of teachers, ensuring that they receive the necessary support and recognition to continue their essential work.
Alhaji. Kayode Akinmade highlighted several challenges that the teaching profession faces and the need to improve on such. These issues collectively contribute to the complex landscape that educators must navigate to provide effective and equitable learning experiences for all.
He further praises the Lagos State government for its immersed contributions to the development of education in the state through the provision of a conductive teaching and learning environment in schools as well as profession of free quality and world class standard of education in the state..
He also thanked the Lagos State government for the payment of WAEC and BECCE fees for all final year students in the state.
As part of the World’s Teachers Day celebration, an exciting football match between teachers from primary and secondary schools took place on Thursday morning at the Oshodi High School football pitch. The friendly competition showcased the camaraderie and sportsmanship among educators, with the primary school teachers emerging victorious in a thrilling 2-1 win over their secondary school counterparts.
The event not only served as a testament to the importance of physical activity and teamwork but also provided a refreshing break from the daily demands of teaching. By fostering a sense of unity and solidarity, the Progressives Teachers’ Movement continues to champion the well-being and professional growth of educators both inside and outside the classroom.
The Central Mosque in Isolo hosted an event where educators came together to express gratitude for their divine calling as teachers and the impact they have on the lives of their students. This spiritual gathering provided a moment of reflection on the significance of their role in shaping the minds of future generations.
The celebrations culminated in a grand finale event at Methodist Primary School on Saturday, where teachers convened to enjoy a day of camaraderie and merriment. In addition to the social activities, a free medical checkup was offered on-site, enabling educators to assess their health and well-being. The checkup included monitoring blood pressure and blood sugar levels, ensuring that the educators’ physical health was prioritized alongside the recognition of their professional contributions.
The Progressives Teachers’ Movement, through this series of events, not only advocated for the professional growth and development of educators but also demonstrated its commitment to supporting teachers’ overall well-being.
