LAGOS — The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, has ended her five-year tenure with a scorecard highlighting significant growth in the institution’s finances, academic programmes, infrastructure, research and sports.
Olatunji-Bello presented the scorecard while speaking at the grand finale of LASU’s 29th and 30th Combined Convocation Ceremonies, where she reviewed the achievements recorded since she assumed office in September 2021.
One of the major highlights was the increase in the university’s internally generated revenue from ₦3 billion in September 2021 to ₦13 billion in September 2025.
The increase represents a ₦10 billion rise, translating to about 333 per cent growth in internally generated revenue over the period.
The Vice-Chancellor also disclosed that LASU recorded a 96 per cent success rate in first-year programme accreditation during her tenure.
She said the university subsequently secured full accreditation for 43 of the 44 programmes presented in 2023, while 17 additional programmes received full accreditation in 2026.
Under her administration, four new faculties and two schools were established, while more than 30 new academic programmes were introduced to expand the university’s course offerings.
The administration also embarked on more than 50 infrastructure projects across the university.
Among the projects were 8,000-bed student hostels and a ₦3 billion TETFund-sponsored Academic Resource Centre, aimed at improving learning and research facilities.
In research and innovation, Olatunji-Bello said LASU researchers secured ₦29 million in grants, while the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) approved ₦3 billion for a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Cyber Security.
The university also recorded notable achievements in sports during the period.
LASU finished second overall at the 2024 All-Africa University Games and went on to win 39 medals at the 2025 Nigeria Universities Games.
The outgoing Vice-Chancellor said 20,604 students were graduating across the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions.
The university also conferred honorary doctorate degrees on business magnate Aliko Dangote, former Chief Justice of Nigeria Akin Kekere-Ekun and business leader Harriet-Ann Omobola Bola Adesola in recognition of their contributions to business, finance,
entrepreneurship and governance.
Reflecting on her five-year tenure, Olatunji-Bello described the period as one that transformed LASU into “the most subscribed university in Nigeria and the most digitally advanced among our peers.”
She expressed appreciation to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his support, identifying the five uninterrupted convocation ceremonies held during her tenure as one of her proudest achievements.
Her tenure therefore closes with LASU recording growth not only in internally generated revenue, but also in academic programmes, accreditation,
infrastructure, research, digital development and sporting achievements.
The university’s next administration will now be expected to consolidate these gains and build on the foundation laid during the five-year tenure.
