The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office has sealed an administrative and kitchen complex belonging to the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, (Jesus Sanctuary) in Surulere over incidents of environmental pollution.
Reports state that residents in the church area, Masha in Surulere, complained against the religious body for indiscrimate discharge of wastewater into the environment.
The action taken by the Lagos State Government was confirmed by the state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on Saturday.
Wahab said, “Following a public complaint received from concerned residents, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office, in enforcing the provisions of the Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017, sealed off the administrative and kitchen complex of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Jesus Sanctuary, Masha, Surulere, Lagos for indiscriminate discharge of wastewater into the environment.”
The Commisioner stated that illegal discharge of wastewater into the environment is harmful to proper health condition as it leads to soil pollution and groundwater contamination which can cause waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and diarrhoea.
Wahab retreated that the Lagos State Government encourages all residents to report all illegal activities leading to the pollution of the environment to necessary bodies as sanctions await perpetrators.
