The Lagos State Government joins the world in commemorating World Car-Free Day, celebrated annually on 22nd September.
Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, re-emphasized the Transport Festival, held on Sunday at Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island. He urged Stakeholders to promote and support transportation systems that are environmentally friendly, socially inclusive, and economically viable.
He reiterated that the Car-Free Day celebration aims to promote Non-Motorized Transportation (NMT), also known as Active Transportation, which includes walking, cycling, skating, and other small-wheeled forms of commuting.
Osiyemi described the event as a significant milestone in the State’s efforts to create safer, more liveable communities by reducing reliance on cars while prioritizing sustainability, public health, and overall well-being. We gather to celebrate the vision of a city that prioritizes people and the environment. By leaving our cars at home, we are taking important steps to reduce our carbon footprint, improve air quality, and make our streets safer for everyone,” Osiyemi stated.
“As we embrace car-free streets, let us reflect on the positive impact of these choices. every step or pedal contributes to a greener, healthier Lagos. We encourage residents to integrate these sustainable practices into their daily lives and inspire others to join the movement.” Osiyemi added.
Executive Director of the Lagos Urban Development Initiative (LUDI), Ms. Ejorh Olamide, emphasized that Car-Free Day serves as a platform to advocate for a shift in transportation habits and to raise awareness of the need for government investment in Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) infrastructure.
Ejorh highlights the rising cost of petrol, noting that more people are now embracing alternative forms of transportation such as cycling and walking. She stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of those who have chosen NMT.
She also commends the Lagos State Government for incorporating cycling lanes on some roads and urged them to expand this infrastructure to further support the growing number of residents adopting non-motorized transportation.
