Ikeja Electric Plc (IE), the foremost electricity distribution company in Nigeria, has partnered with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to encourage sustainable waste management practices.

Ikeja Electric has generously provided waste bins to eighteen selected schools within its operational area, aiming to promote environmental awareness in the community.

During the handover ceremony, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, commended Ikeja Electric for leading this significant initiative.

Dr. Gbadegesin emphasized the important role of waste disposal through designated bins in the waste management cycle and expressed hope that other organizations in the state would also take up similar initiatives as part of their corporate social responsibility efforts.

Discussing broader state initiatives, Dr. Gbadegesin pointed out the government’s current actions, such as introducing smart bins and collaborating with the Ministry of Education to incorporate waste management into school curriculums.

This strategy aims to raise awareness about sustainability among students and cultivate a generation that is environmentally conscious.

Mr. Kingsley Okotie, Spokesperson and Head of Corporate Communications at Ikeja Electric, stressed the significance of the initiative, which has received strong support from the company’s leadership for instigating sustainable waste disposal practices among youths through their Corporate Social Responsibility efforts.

Okotie highlighted the importance of waste sorting, reuse, recycling, and reduction to achieve a more sustainable waste management approach.

He expressed confidence that educating children on the proper use of the donated waste bins would instill a consciousness about the opportunities within the entire waste-to-wealth management cycle.
