APC Holds Local Council Election Primaries in Lagos State
Preparations are in top gear ahead of the May 10, chairmanship and councillorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria.
On Wednesday, the Party convened a high-level meeting of party leaders, aspirants, and key decision-makers, to fine-tune arrangements for the selection of candidates who will fly the party’s flag in the July 12 Local Government elections.
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) had earlier fixed July 12 for the LG polls across the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
One of the highlights of Wednesday’s meeting was the strong recommendation by the party leadership for the adoption of consensus candidates where possible.
According to party officials, consensus arrangements will not only ease tensions within the party but also streamline the primaries, making them less contentious and more unifying.
All chairmanship position primaries will hold at the State secretariat of the party while the party has set up 57 committees to oversee the councillorship primaries in all local governments and local council development areas.
The stakeholders also deliberated on logistical preparedness, security, and fairness of the upcoming exercise.
Opposition Parties Preparation
Little or nothing has been heard or seen of the major opposition parties in the State ahead of the LG polls.
Our correspondent notes that only very few posters of opposition party candidates could be seen on the streets of Lagos in an election that is just two months away.
With just days to the primaries, all eyes remain on the APC as it attempts to balance internal democracy with strategic consensus-building—a move that could shape the future of local governance in Lagos State.
