Residents and motorists in Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Lagos, may still have to wait for relief from the poor condition of Kirikiri Federal Road, as the House of Representatives has again called on the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to complete the abandoned rehabilitation work.

The lawmakers want FERMA to urgently return to the road, particularly the Berger-Suya axis, and attend to other sections within Ajeromi-Ifelodun that were left out of an earlier rehabilitation exercise.

The renewed call followed a motion sponsored by Hon. Kalejaiye Adeboye Paul, who raised concerns that the road project remained incomplete despite an earlier intervention by the House.

On October 3, 2023, the House had adopted a resolution directing that the road be rehabilitated. However, while FERMA reportedly carried out extensive work on the Amuwo section, the portion within Ajeromi-Ifelodun was left untouched.

The unfinished work has continued to affect residents, commuters, transport operators and businesses that depend on the road for their daily activities. Poor road conditions also make the movement of people and goods more difficult.

The lawmakers said the original purpose of the 2023 resolution had not been achieved and that further action was necessary to address the problem.

They have now asked FERMA to assess the entire Kirikiri Federal Road, paying particular attention to the Berger-Suya axis. The agency is also expected to examine previously repaired sections, identify defective work and correct any repairs that fail to meet approved engineering standards.

FERMA was further urged to resume work on the outstanding sections and speed up the rehabilitation process.

To ensure that the agency acts on the directive, the House has mandated its Committees on Works and FERMA to monitor implementation.

For residents and road users in Ajeromi-Ifelodun, the concern is straightforward: they need the road fixed, not another promise of rehabilitation. The latest resolution is expected to put pressure on the relevant agency to complete the work and ease the difficulties faced by people who use the road daily.
