Kenya Airways Cargo has successfully flown more than 50 cows to Nigeria’s commercial hub through a charter operation, showcasing the growing role of specialised air freight in livestock transportation.

The animals left Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Tuesday aboard a Boeing 737-800 freighter operated by Kenya Airways Cargo and arrived at Murtala Muhammed International Airport after a flight of roughly five hours and 15 minutes. The operation was handled under the airline’s KQ Live product, which is designed for the safe transport of live animals.

According to the airline, the shipment required careful planning and specialised handling. Temperature regulation, ventilation and appropriate containment were maintained throughout the journey to support animal welfare. Veterinary personnel and cargo staff oversaw the loading process at the Nairobi airport.

Fitsum Abadi, Cargo Director at Kenya Airways, described the flight as a milestone. “Live animal shipments require meticulous planning, specialised handling and close coordination throughout the journey,” he said. “This milestone reinforces our commitment to supporting intra-African trade through flexible and reliable cargo solutions.”

The charter forms part of a wider effort by Kenya Airways to strengthen its cargo division and expand into specialised segments, including pharmaceuticals, perishables, dangerous goods and live animals. The airline has been repositioning KQ Cargo as a strategic source of revenue beyond general freight.

The client’s identity and the precise purpose of the shipment were not disclosed. What is clear is the practical demonstration of how air cargo can move high-value livestock quickly across the continent when road or sea transport is less suitable.
