The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), through its flagship timbuktoo initiative, is inviting African mining technology startups to apply for its 2026 Pan-African MineTech Startup Incubation Programme.

The initiative aims to support innovative African entrepreneurs developing technology-driven solutions to improve mining safety, environmental sustainability, mineral traceability and operational efficiency across the continent.

The programme is coordinated through the timbuktoo MineTech Hub, hosted in Zambia, and seeks to connect promising startups with incubation support, experienced mentors, investors and a broader network of African innovators.

According to UNDP, the initiative is designed to help startups refine their solutions, strengthen their business models and prepare for investment and expansion within Africa’s mining industry.

Areas of Focus

The programme welcomes technology startups developing solutions to challenges across the mining and mineral value chain, including:

  • Mine safety: Technologies that protect miners and improve workplace safety.
  • Artisanal and small-scale mining: Tools that support formalisation, mechanisation and safer mining practices.
  • Mineral traceability: Digital solutions that improve transparency, accountability and responsible sourcing.
  • Environmental monitoring: Technologies that detect environmental damage and support climate resilience.
  • Mining automation: Remote operations, autonomous systems and technologies that improve productivity.
  • Mineral processing and battery technology: Innovations in mineral recovery, lithium-ion battery development and related value chains.
  • Mining logistics and financial inclusion: Solutions that improve market access, trade and financial services for mining-linked businesses.

Who Can Apply?

The opportunity is open to startups based in Africa or developing solutions for African mining markets.

Eligible applicants should have a committed founding team, a working prototype or minimum viable product (MVP), and a technology-based solution addressing a clearly identified challenge in the mining sector.

Women-led and youth-led businesses, as well as entrepreneurs from underserved and mining-affected communities, are particularly encouraged to apply.

Benefits of the Programme

Selected startups will receive structured incubation support through accredited organisations within the timbuktoo network. Participants will also gain access to mentorship, learning resources, investor networks and connections with founders and industry stakeholders across Africa.

The programme is intended to strengthen product development, improve business readiness and help promising ventures identify pathways to market adoption and investment.

Funding note: The 2026 incubation call does not guarantee a specific cash grant for every participant. Startups should consult the official programme announcement for the benefits and terms applicable to their cohort.
