Nigerian singer and songwriter FOLA has released his second studio album, 9, a 14-track project featuring some of the biggest names in Afrobeats, including Davido, Ayra Starr, BNXN, Bella Shmurda, Zlatan and Darkoo.

The album follows his debut project, Catharsis, which crossed 100 million streams and spent several weeks at No. 1 on the Official Nigeria Top 100 Albums chart. With that success behind him, FOLA faces the challenge of proving that he can deliver another strong body of work.

The album’s title draws inspiration from football. In the game, the number nine shirt is traditionally worn by a striker, whose job is to finish scoring chances. FOLA identifies with that role, describing himself as an artist people look to when they need a hit song.

Several tracks were released ahead of the album to build anticipation. They include Treat U Right featuring Ayra Starr, attention! and fine ting (fine $hit). The latest pre-album release was it’s over, featuring his label boss, Bella Shmurda, and rapper Zlatan. Released on September 10, the song also serves as the album’s closing track.

Other songs expected to attract listeners include 2am In Toronto featuring Davido, My Type featuring BNXN and Hold U Down featuring Darkoo.

The project also draws attention with Crime, reported to be a remake of 2Baba’s 2006 hit, If Love Is a Crime. Another track, WAF, gained popularity on TikTok after an unreleased version leaked in May.

Since the release of Catharsis, FOLA has continued to build his profile through collaborations with artists such as Victony, Bella Shmurda and BNXN. He also appeared alongside Davido and Mayorkun on B4 B4.

With 9 now available, FOLA has another opportunity to expand his audience and strengthen his position in the Nigerian music industry. The album’s reception will help determine whether the singer can match the success of his debut and live up to the confidence behind its football-inspired title.
