Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a 24-year-old man, Segun Alani, over alleged membership of an unlawful society and possession of an illegal firearm in the Mushin area of Lagos.

Alani was arrested on August 10, 2026, at about 6:00 p.m. at Ogunmokun under the bridge, an area police described as a notorious black spot under surveillance following repeated reports of criminal activities.

According to police sources, Alani and other suspects, who are currently at large, were allegedly sighted at the location under circumstances that raised suspicion. Tactical Squad operatives moved in and arrested Alani, while the others reportedly fled.

A search conducted at the scene allegedly led to the recovery of a locally made, cut-to-size single-barrel gun. Police said the suspect could not give a satisfactory account of how he obtained the firearm.

The suspect was subsequently arraigned before Magistrate L.A. Owolabi, with SP Josephine Ihkayere appearing as prosecutor.

The first count accused Alani and others at large of conspiring to commit a felony, namely unlawful society, contrary to Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The second count alleged that the defendant was in possession of a locally made, cut-to-size single-barrel gun without providing a satisfactory account of how he came by it, contrary to Section 330(d) of the same law.

The defendant’s plea was not taken. The court ordered that he be remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) of the Lagos State Ministry of Justice.

The operation was led by SP Banti Adamu, Officer-in-Charge of the Command Tactical Squad at the State Headquarters, Ikeja, while Inspector Ihiator Emmanuel served as the Investigating Police Officer.

The case file has been forwarded to the ICT Prosecutor’s Office in Ogba and the DPP for further legal advice.

Residents of Ogunmokun and Mushin reportedly commended the police for renewed operations against suspected criminal activities in the area. The Command said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and reiterated its commitment to tackling unlawful societies and illegal possession of firearms across Lagos State.

The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
