SEC Plans Savings Opportunity for Nigerians and Small Businesses
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is working on a proposed National Savings Scheme that could create new savings and investment opportunities for Nigerians.
These include individuals and small businesses.
The initiative is being developed to encourage Nigerians to save regularly while providing opportunities to channel their savings into formal investment products within the Nigerian capital market.
SEC Director-General, Dr Emomotimi Agama, disclosed the plan during a strategic partnership meeting with the Presidency in Abuja ahead of the Capital Market Conversation, scheduled for October 19, 2026, at the Presidential Villa.
According to Agama, the proposed scheme is designed to promote greater financial inclusion by making structured savings and investment opportunities more accessible to Nigerians who may currently have limited participation in the capital market.
Potential Benefits for Nigerians
The proposed National Savings Scheme is expected to explore tax incentives as a way of encouraging individuals and businesses to develop long-term savings habits.
If implemented, participants could potentially benefit from incentives designed to make saving and investing more attractive, while small businesses could gain access to a broader pool of domestic capital.
The initiative is also expected to support efforts to mobilise domestic savings and direct more funds towards productive investments within the Nigerian economy.
Who Could Benefit?
The proposed scheme could be relevant to:
- Nigerian individuals interested in structured savings.
- Young people looking to develop long-term investment habits.
- Small and medium-sized businesses.
- Entrepreneurs seeking better ways to manage and grow their savings.
- Nigerians seeking access to formal capital-market investment opportunities.
Applications and Registration
Applications and registrations have not yet opened. The SEC is still developing the proposed scheme, and details such as eligibility requirements, application procedures, participating financial institutions, investment options, minimum savings amounts and specific tax incentives have yet to be officially announced.
Nigerians interested in the opportunity are therefore advised to monitor official announcements from the Securities and Exchange Commission and other relevant government agencies for the opening of registration.
The proposed initiative is part of broader efforts to increase participation in Nigeria’s capital market and encourage a stronger culture of savings and investment.
Further details are expected as consultations continue and the government moves towards finalising the structure and implementation framework for the scheme.
