53-Year-Old Woman Jailed One Month for Dumping Refuse in Lagos Drain During Rainstorm

A 53-year-old resident of Meiran, Nelly Monday, has been sentenced to one month in prison without an option of fine by the Lagos State Magistrate Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi, for illegally dumping refuse into a public drainage channel.

Monday was arrested on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, after she was allegedly caught disposing of waste into the drainage during heavy rainfall.

She was subsequently arraigned before the court and pleaded guilty to the charge of improper waste disposal.

Following her guilty plea, the presiding magistrate sentenced her to one month imprisonment without an option of fine.
Reacting to the judgment, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) warned residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse, particularly the practice of using drainage channels as dumping grounds during rainfall.

LAWMA said it would continue to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to identify, arrest and prosecute environmental offenders across Lagos.
The agency urged residents to dispose of their waste responsibly and patronise approved waste collection operators to avoid prosecution.
