Mama G Urges Parents To Let Children Experience Life’s Challenges

Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, popularly known as Mama G, has cautioned parents against over pampering their children, warning that making life too easy for them could prevent them from becoming responsible and independent adults.
Ozokwor gave the advice while speaking about parenting, wealth and inheritance, urging parents to allow their children to experience challenges and understand the effort required to build a successful life.
According to the actress, parents who constantly shield their children from hardship in an attempt to give them a better childhood could end up doing more harm than good.
“When you say, ‘I don’t want my children to suffer what I suffered when I was growing up’, you see, that’s the best way to destroy your children,” she said.
Ozokwor clarified that she was not advocating deliberate hardship or denying children their basic needs.
Rather, she urged parents to allow their children to struggle through certain challenges and learn how to work for the things they want.
“I’m not saying allow them to suffer, what I’m saying is allow them to struggle. Go through the process.
“But when you pamper them, they don’t come out to be anything,” she said.
The actress also advised parents to be careful about how they handle family wealth and inheritance.
She said children should not grow up with the expectation that everything their parents have accumulated would automatically become theirs.
“Keep the things that you have and let them know that you go get yours, this is mine,” she added.
Speaking from her own experience, Ozokwor revealed that she adopted the same approach with her son, telling him to work towards owning his own home rather than assuming that her property belonged to him.
“I told my son, my house isn’t yours, go and work for your own,” she said.
Her comments have sparked discussions about parenting styles, financial independence and the role parents should play in preparing their children for adulthood.
