The governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged sport associations to mobilize athletes in the grassroots, ensure their growth and development

Sanwo-Olu hosted the sport associations chairmen in Lagos recently where he backed them to take responsibility for the scouting of young talented athletes while developing a pathway for them to flourish in their career.

He said sports in Lagos has extended beyond competition and should rather open doors of endless opportunities, education, employment and economic development.

“I inaugurated 44 chairmen of sports associations across Lagos State and charged them with the responsibility to find talent early, develop it properly and create pathways for our athletes to compete and succeed at the highest levels,” Sanwo-Olu said.

“Sports in Lagos goes beyond competition. It creates opportunities and can open doors to education, employment, entrepreneurship and economic growth.

“I have asked the new leadership to focus on strong grassroots development, transparency, accountability and regular competitions, while creating opportunities for women, girls, persons with disabilities and other emerging talents.”

Sanwo-Olu stated, Lagos has abundance of talented athletes and the sport associations should turn the talents to champions on the big stage.

He however looked forward to the future of how the athletes develop and what they turned out to achieve.

“Lagos has no shortage of talent. Our job is to build the systems and opportunities that can turn that talent into champions.

“I look forward to seeing the athletes they develop and the champions they produce.”
