Ikeja Court Remands Cleric Over Alleged Defilement of Granddaughter

A 74 year old cleric, Joseph Adeniran, has been remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre over the alleged defilement of his 9 year old granddaughter.

Adeniran was arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on a charge of defilement following allegations that he sexually abused the child at his residence on June 18, 2026.

The prosecutor, ASP Adegoke Ademigbuji, told the court that the defendant allegedly inserted his finger into the girl, resulting in heavy bleeding.

According to the prosecution, the incident came to light after a neighbour noticed bloodstains on the child’s clothing and questioned her about what had happened.

The girl allegedly told the neighbour that her grandfather had fingered her, prompting the matter to be reported to the police.

The report subsequently led to Adeniran’s arrest and prosecution.

The prosecutor said the alleged offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Adeniran did not enter a plea as the Chief Magistrate, Mrs C. M. Kushanu, did not take his plea.

Kushanu subsequently ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions, DPP.

The matter was adjourned until September 24, when the case is expected to come up again.

The allegations against Adeniran have not been determined by the court.
