Pensioners: Sowore Condemns Alleged Tear-Gassing At Lagos Assembly

The 2027 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has condemned the alleged tear-gassing of protesting pensioners at the Lagos State House of Assembly, describing the incident as being “equivalent to pushing them into a gas chamber.”

Sowore made the statement on Monday while reacting to reports that security operatives allegedly used tear gas to disperse pensioners protesting over their outstanding post-retirement entitlements.

The AAC presidential candidate described the alleged action as an unprovoked attack on elderly citizens who, according to him, were simply demanding benefits owed to them after years of service to the country.

Sowore also raised concerns about the potential health implications of exposing elderly protesters to chemical fumes, noting that some pensioners could already be vulnerable to their effects.

“Many of these pensioners may already be vulnerable to the dangerous effects of chemical fumes, and such an assault is grave; it could even have fatal consequences,” he said.

He called for the identification, arrest and investigation of the security officers allegedly involved in the incident.

Sowore maintained that pensioners should be allowed to peacefully demand their legitimate entitlements and should be treated with dignity and respect rather than subjected to what he described as brutality.

His comments come amid renewed concerns over the welfare of pensioners and the handling of protests over unpaid retirement benefits in Lagos.
