Early-stage agribusinesses across East Africa can now seek US$1 million to US$3 million in investment through AgDevCo Ventures, a specialist investment vehicle established to help promising agricultural businesses scale and create lasting economic impact.

AgDevCo, a specialist investor in African agriculture, launched AgDevCo Ventures to provide smaller-ticket, patient capital to early-stage agri-SMEs that may struggle to secure suitable commercial financing. The investment vehicle recently announced a US$49 million first close, including private capital, to support its investment activities.

The programme targets businesses operating across the agricultural value chain in Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. Eligible businesses can operate in areas including primary agricultural production, processing and agricultural input supply.

What AgDevCo Ventures Offers

AgDevCo Ventures provides US$1 million–US$3 million in medium-term risk capital, primarily through mezzanine financing. The facility can also mobilise matching grant funding for technical assistance, smallholder outgrower programmes, gender initiatives and climate-related projects.

Its financing structure can include mezzanine loans with tenors of up to eight years, relatively low interest rates with an equity kicker linked to business performance, and extended grace periods designed to reduce pressure on business cash flows.

The investment is complemented by hands-on technical and strategic support from AgDevCo’s specialists, giving investee companies access to expertise in areas such as agronomy, business operations, ESG practices and smallholder engagement.

Who Can Apply?

AgDevCo Ventures is looking for high-potential early-stage agribusinesses that meet key investment requirements.

Applicants should have:

  • At least three years of operating history.
  • A high-impact business model with potential to scale profitably.
  • A capable and committed management team.
  • Operations in one of the five target East African countries.
  • A business operating somewhere along the agricultural value chain.
  • The potential to generate positive impact for smallholder farmers, employees, entrepreneurs or customers.

The programme also places strong emphasis on responsible investment. Potential investees are subjected to environmental, social and governance due diligence and must comply with applicable laws and AgDevCo’s Responsible Business Principles.

AgDevCo also says it aims to support a high proportion of Black African-owned and women-owned or women-led businesses through the Ventures portfolio.

Businesses and Sectors of Interest

The investment programme is open to businesses across the agricultural value chain, meaning eligible companies do not have to be traditional farming enterprises.

Potential areas include:

  • Agricultural production
  • Food and agricultural processing
  • Farm inputs and supplies
  • Agribusiness services
  • Businesses working directly with smallholder farmers
  • Other commercially viable agricultural value-chain businesses

The focus is on companies with a credible path to profitable growth and measurable development impact.

No Conventional Application Deadline

Unlike a typical grant or competition, AgDevCo Ventures is an investment programme rather than a fixed-deadline funding call. AgDevCo evaluates potential investments on their individual merits.

Businesses that believe they meet the investment criteria can contact AgDevCo directly to discuss their opportunity and investment requirements.

Interested agribusinesses can submit investment enquiries through investment@agdevco.com.

Why This Opportunity Matters

AgDevCo’s latest investment initiative comes as the organisation expands its efforts to channel patient capital into African agriculture. Its 2025 portfolio generated US$581 million in revenue, supported more than 38,000 jobs and engaged over 2.6 million small-scale farmers, traders and customers, demonstrating the potential development impact of commercially successful agribusinesses.

For qualifying East African agribusinesses, AgDevCo Ventures offers more than financing. The programme combines patient investment with specialist business support designed to help companies strengthen their operations, expand sustainably and increase their impact across agricultural communities.

Interested businesses should review the AgDevCo Ventures investment criteria and contact AgDevCo directly before submitting an investment enquiry.
