The Lagos State Police Command has arrested five suspected telecommunication vandals and recovered a truckload of suspected stolen iron rods in the Ibeju-Lekki area of the state.

The suspects, identified as Mohammed Shaibu, 26; Musa Zakari, 29; Abdullahi Bala, 22; Salisu Musa, 18; and Yahuza Bala, 20, were reportedly arrested while allegedly conveying the stolen materials in a truck.

According to the Police Command, the suspects were allegedly caught stealing iron poles meant for the construction of telecommunication masts. Their arrest formed part of ongoing efforts by the Command to tackle the vandalism and theft of critical infrastructure across Lagos.

The suspects are currently being held in police custody, while the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, has commenced an investigation into the matter.

The Command said efforts were also underway to apprehend other suspects who reportedly fled the scene and determine the full extent of the alleged operation.

The police acknowledged the support of the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, noting that the cooperation between both security agencies played a significant role in the operation and subsequent arrests.

Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting critical infrastructure across the state and ensuring that individuals involved in vandalism and theft are brought to justice.

He also urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information to the police whenever they notice suspicious activities in their communities.

The five suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
