ECOWAS Opens $65,000 Opportunity for Nigerian Business Owners

A major opportunity has opened for Nigerian entrepreneurs looking to take their businesses to the next level, with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) inviting eligible startups to compete for a combined $65,000 cash prize.

The 2026 ECOWAS Startup Awards are designed to spotlight innovative businesses across West Africa while giving entrepreneurs access to funding, mentorship, investors and regional markets.

Applications opened on August 3 and will close on August 31, 2026, with 60 startups expected to be selected from across the ECOWAS region. Successful applicants will participate in virtual masterclasses and startup clinics before the physical programme scheduled for September 28–30 in Abuja.

The competition is targeting startups in sectors with strong potential to address everyday economic and social challenges, including EdTech and Skills Development, FinTech, HealthTech, AgriTech and Food Systems, CleanTech, Climate and Green Innovation, and Tourism, Hospitality and TravelTech.

Female-led businesses have also been encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity.

For Nigerian entrepreneurs, however, the competition is not open to every new business. Applicants must be citizens of an ECOWAS member state and operate a registered startup based within the region. Their businesses must have been operating for at least two years, with a functional product or service and evidence of market traction or the potential to scale.

There is also a significant financial incentive. The overall $65,000 prize pool will be divided among the top three finalists, with the winner receiving $30,000, the first runner-up $20,000 and the second runner-up $15,000.

But the opportunity goes beyond the cash.

Selected entrepreneurs will gain exposure to potential investors and regional business networks, while winners and participants will have access to digital resources and a six-month acceleration and mentorship programme aimed at helping them strengthen and expand their ventures.

Applicants will need to demonstrate that their businesses are more than just promising ideas. Required documents include an approved ECOWAS identification document, business registration certificate where applicable, two years of financial statements or projections, a business plan of no more than 10 pages, a pitch deck of up to 10 slides and a one-minute pitch video.

Judges will consider factors such as the problem the business is solving, the effectiveness and originality of its solution, the strength of its team, growth potential, financial sustainability and wider social and economic impact.

The final stage will take place in Abuja on September 30, where shortlisted founders will pitch their businesses before a panel of industry experts, investors and policymakers.

The 2026 awards mark the return of the ECOWAS Startup Awards, following the inaugural edition held in Niamey, Niger, in November 2021.

For Nigerian founders already building businesses and looking for the funding, connections and exposure needed to grow, the programme offers an opportunity to move from surviving in a challenging market to competing on a regional stage.
