Commonwealth Games 2026: Nigerian Quartet Edges Ghana In Thrilling 4x100m Battle To Win Silver

Nigeria’s men’s 4x100m relay team produced a thrilling performance to claim silver at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, underlining their status among the Commonwealth’s sprint elite.

The Nigerian quartet stopped the clock at 38.12 seconds, finishing just 0.05 seconds behind Australia, who took gold in 38.07. Ghana edged England for bronze in 38.13, in one of the closest relay finishes of the Games. England placed fourth in 38.71, with Jamaica fifth in 39.07, while Canada and South Africa were disqualified.

The silver capped an outstanding sprint campaign for Team Nigeria. The team of Kayinsola Ajayi, Favour Ashe, Udodi Onwuzurike and Adekalu Fakorede combined blistering speed with calm execution and seamless baton exchanges to stay in contention right to the line.

Several members had already shone individually. Ajayi ended a 20-year wait for a Commonwealth Games medal by taking bronze in the men’s 100m, while Onwuzurike claimed silver in the 200m. Together with the relay success, the Nigerian sprinters have emerged as one of the strongest squads at these Games.

The result adds to an exceptional athletics campaign that has already delivered gold for Samuel Ogazi in the men’s 400m, Ezekiel Nathaniel in the 400m hurdles and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi in the shot put, alongside podium finishes for Jessica Oji, Ella Onojuvwevwo, Tobi Amusan, Temitope Adeshina and others.

Team Nigeria’s medal tally now stands at 22 with 10 gold, 7 silver and 5 bronze as the country’s remarkable Glasgow 2026 campaign continues.
