LUTH Emergency Services Crippled as Resident Doctors’ Indefinite Strike Grounds Operation
LAGOS — Emergency medical services at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) have been severely disrupted as resident doctors continue their indefinite strike, forcing the hospital’s Accident and Emergency (A&E) unit to suspend critical admissions.
A visit to the hospital showed a deserted emergency department, with new emergency cases reportedly not being attended to and emergency calls left unanswered due to the absence of resident doctors, who provide the bulk of frontline clinical services.
Although senior consultants and nurses remain on duty, hospital operations have been significantly affected, leaving the emergency unit unable to function at full capacity.
LUTH management has advised members of the public requiring urgent medical attention to seek treatment at other healthcare facilities while discussions between the resident doctors’ representatives and the Federal Government continue.
As negotiations remain unresolved, concerns are mounting over the impact of the strike on patients who depend on one of Nigeria’s foremost tertiary healthcare institutions for emergency medical care.
