Lagos Sets Climate Milestone With Nigeria’s First State Emissions Registry
The Lagos State Government has launched the Lagos State Greenhouse Gas Registry (LGHGR), becoming the first sub-national government in Nigeria to establish a comprehensive greenhouse gas emissions registry.
The government described the initiative as another milestone in its environmental sustainability agenda, aimed at strengthening climate governance and improving the monitoring, reporting and management of greenhouse gas emissions across the state.
The launch took place at the Central Business District in Alausa, Ikeja, and was attended by the Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, members of the Lagos State Executive Council, representatives of the Federal Ministry of Environment, development partners, TPHG Technologies, members of the diplomatic and business communities, academia, civil society organisations and the media.
According to the state government, the registry will provide a structured system for tracking greenhouse gas emissions, supporting data-driven policies to reduce emissions and promote environmental sustainability.
The government added that the initiative reinforces Lagos’ position as a leader in climate action and will help advance efforts to build a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment.
