ZoomLion Rehabilitates Olusosun Landfill Road Under CSR Initiative

The Lagos State Government has commissioned a newly rehabilitated 1.2-kilometre access road and two engineered tipping platforms at the Olusosun Landfill in Ojota to improve waste evacuation and strengthen waste management across the state.

The project, executed by ZoomLion Nigeria Limited under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, is expected to improve access for refuse trucks, reduce turnaround time for Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators and ease waste collection challenges experienced across Lagos after weeks of heavy rainfall.

Speaking at the commissioning, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, described the project as a major step toward improving waste management through stronger collaboration with the private sector.

He said the initiative marked a new phase in the state’s waste management strategy, where partnerships now extend beyond waste collection to engineering and technical solutions that enhance landfill operations.

Gbadegesin explained that the project would make it easier for waste trucks to access the landfill, dispose of refuse more quickly and return to communities for further collections.

He noted that experts from countries including Kenya and Ghana were engaged because Lagos needed urgent technical solutions to address the waste disposal challenges caused by heavy rains.

The LAWMA boss commended ZoomLion Nigeria for completing the project despite difficult weather conditions, describing the new access road and tipping platforms as some of the most durable waste management infrastructure delivered in recent years.

He also thanked Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources and ZoomLion Nigeria for supporting the intervention, expressing confidence that it would encourage greater collaboration in the state’s waste management reforms.

Earlier, the Managing Director of ZoomLion Nigeria, Habiba Abubakar, said the project was undertaken to restore access to landfill sites that had become inaccessible due to prolonged rainfall.

She explained that the recent waste collection challenges experienced by residents were largely caused by refuse trucks being unable to access dump sites rather than a failure by PSP operators to collect waste from homes.

According to her, trucks that would normally make two trips daily were spending several days before they could offload waste, slowing down refuse collection across the city.

Abubakar said ZoomLion responded to an emergency request from the Lagos State Government and LAWMA, even though the assignment was outside the company’s contractual obligations.

She added that the company deployed technical experts from several African countries to complete the project, which was initially scheduled for 21 days but eventually took 25 days because of persistent rainfall.

According to her, the upgraded road and tipping platforms will improve landfill operations by allowing trucks to move faster, reduce waiting time and enhance waste collection across Lagos.

She added that the intervention aligns with the company’s broader partnership with the state government to promote sustainable waste management and develop waste-to-wealth initiatives.

Project engineers disclosed that ZoomLion reconstructed the 1.2-kilometre Road E and built two engineered tipping platforms using hard rock and laterite materials to ensure all-weather access for waste trucks.

Clarifying reports about the future of the Olusosun Landfill, Gbadegesin said the facility had not been shut down. He explained that the state government only announced plans to gradually phase out operations after transfer loading stations and material recovery facilities become operational.

He also revealed that ZoomLion is partnering with the state government on the development of transfer loading stations and material recovery facilities, while Lagos continues investing in waste-to-energy plants, biogas facilities and other modern waste management infrastructure.

Gbadegesin disclosed that the rehabilitation project was fully funded by ZoomLion Nigeria under its CSR programme and did not cost the Lagos State Government any money.
