The  Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Hon. Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson, has joined the global campaign against hard drug use, substance abuse and illicit trafficking as the world commemorates the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, popularly known as World Drug Day.

The annual observance seeks to raise awareness about the dangers associated with illicit drugs and reinforce efforts toward building a drug-free society.

In a statement issued through his media office, Akinpelu described drug abuse as a destructive social menace that has ruined countless lives, homes, businesses and careers.

According to him, hard drug use remains a major obstacle to personal development and economic productivity, as individuals struggling with addiction often prioritise substance use over meaningful pursuits, depleting their savings, investments and future prospects.

“Today, and as always, I stand firmly against hard drug use because nothing good has ever come from it. It has destroyed many homes, businesses and careers. Those who engage in drug abuse often become consumed by addiction, prioritising substance use over productive ventures, thereby draining their investments, savings and future prospects. It is a major disaster that diverts attention from meaningful goals and hinders personal growth,” he said.

The council chairman expressed concern over the increasing involvement of young people, particularly secondary school students, in drug abuse, describing the trend as disturbing and a threat to the future of society.

“One of the most painful realities is that young people, particularly students in secondary schools, are increasingly being introduced to drugs. This is deeply disturbing and raises serious concerns about the future of our society. Drug abuse has become so widespread that it is difficult to find a community where it does not exist,” he stated.

Akinpelu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to combating drug abuse and pledged sustained efforts to tackle the menace at the grassroots level.

He also commended the activities of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for its continued crackdown on drug traffickers and dealers across the country.

“As a government, we are doing our best to fight this menace, and we will not relent in our efforts. I also commend the NDLEA for its continued dedication and remarkable work in cracking down on drug traffickers and merchants,” he added.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was established by the United Nations General Assembly to strengthen global cooperation and action aimed at achieving a drug-free world.
