Sanwo-Olu Reaffirms Commitment to Foundational Learning at Education Programme Closing
The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated the importance of strengthening foundational learning among pupils as part of efforts to build a stronger and more effective education system in the state.
The governor made this known through representatives of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), Hon. Owolabi Jamiu Falana and Hon. Sijuade Idowu-Tiamiyu, during the closing ceremony of the Africa Missions Global Foundational Learning Intervention Pilot Phase.
The event was held on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at Ifako Nursery and Primary School and brought together education stakeholders, teachers, pupils, and programme partners.
Speaking on behalf of the governor, the LASUBEB representatives noted that the intervention aligns with the Lagos State Government’s broader education reform agenda aimed at improving literacy and numeracy among primary school pupils.
They emphasized that strengthening early learning skills remains a crucial building block for academic success, adding that the state government is committed to supporting programmes that enhance the quality of teaching and learning at the foundational level.
According to them, the pilot programme provided participating schools with targeted learning strategies and teaching tools designed to improve pupils’ reading, comprehension, and numerical abilities.
The closing ceremony also featured a variety of activities showcasing the impact of the programme. Pupils participated in a Spelling Bee competition, while teachers engaged in professional contests highlighting innovative teaching methods adopted during the pilot phase.
In addition, pupils entertained guests with colourful cultural performances that reflected the diversity and creativity within Lagos public schools.
The event concluded with the presentation of awards and prizes to winners of the various competitions, followed by a group photograph session involving organisers, teachers, pupils, and invited guests to commemorate the successful completion of the pilot phase.
Education stakeholders at the event expressed optimism that the outcomes of the intervention would further strengthen the quality of foundational education across public primary schools in Lagos State.
