In a move aimed at keeping markets clean, safe and healthy for everyone, Alimosho Local Government has carried out a large-scale fumigation exercise across major markets in the area.
The exercise took place on Friday evening, January 23, 2026, with the Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Hon. Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson, personally on ground to supervise operations at Iyana-Ipaja Market and Bola Ahmed Tinubu Market. Officials from the council’s Environmental Department also joined the exercise.
Markets fumigated include Orisunmbare Market, Baale Market, Olugbede Market, Iyana-Ipaja Market and Bola Ahmed Tinubu Market, alongside other trading hubs within the local government.
Speaking during the exercise, Hon. Akinpelu said the fumigation was part of his administration’s ongoing drive to protect public health, especially for traders, shoppers and young people who rely on these markets daily. He made it clear that the exercise was not a one-time action but part of a continuous plan to keep markets safe.
“This fumigation is not a one-off,” he said. “We are serious about controlling pests, insects, rodents and harmful bacteria that can contaminate food and cause health problems. Our aim is to make sure our markets remain clean, hygienic and safe for everyone.”
The Chairman also called on market leaders, traders and shop owners to play their part by keeping their stalls and surroundings clean, stressing that government efforts work best when the community gets involved.
The Head of the Department of Environment, Mrs. Odu Elizabeth, revealed that her team carried out awareness campaigns ahead of the exercise to educate traders on why fumigation is important.
“We spoke with market leaders and traders beforehand to explain the benefits,” she said. “That’s why the exercise went smoothly without resistance. People now understand that fumigation is about their health and safety.”
Members of the local government management team, led by the Head of Administration, Dr. Idowu Banjoko, were also present to support the exercise and ensure everything went according to plan.
Many residents and traders have praised the initiative, describing it as a timely and practical step that shows the council’s commitment to a cleaner environment, better public health and a more liveable Alimosho for the younger generation and future residents.
