Alimosho Local Government has officially launched a community based nutrition intervention aimed at reducing malnutrition among children aged zero to five years across the council area.
Speaking at the flag off ceremony, the Chairman welcomed stakeholders, partners, caregivers and beneficiaries, describing the initiative as a timely and practical response to one of the most pressing child health challenges facing communities today.
The programme is being implemented through a strategic partnership between the Health Emergency Initiative and the Nigerian Exchange Group. It focuses on vulnerable children and their caregivers within District One of Alimosho Local Government, with about 120 children and caregivers expected to benefit directly.
The Chairman noted that malnutrition remains a major threat to child survival, growth and overall development. If left unaddressed, he said, it carries long term consequences for public health and social productivity.
He explained that the intervention combines nutritional screening, targeted nutrition support, caregiver education and referrals where necessary, providing a proactive approach to early detection, prevention and effective management of malnutrition.
Commending the Health Emergency Initiative and the Nigerian Exchange Group for their continued commitment to child health and nutrition, the Chairman also acknowledged the efforts of frontline health workers whose dedication continues to strengthen healthcare delivery at the grassroots level.
He encouraged caregivers to participate actively in the programme, stressing that proper nutrition and care in early childhood form the foundation for a child’s future health and development.
The Chairman further stated that the initiative builds on the successes of previous malnutrition programmes and aligns with the local government’s broader drive to strengthen primary healthcare services across Alimosho.
As the tier of government closest to the people, he reaffirmed the council’s commitment to policies, partnerships and programmes that promote preventive healthcare and improve the overall wellbeing of residents.
He assured partners and stakeholders of the local government’s continued support for initiatives that advance child health, nutrition and community development, noting that the use of the Secretariat Hall for the programme reflects this commitment.
The programme was subsequently declared open, marking another important step towards building healthier children and a stronger, more resilient Alimosho community.
