It was another brilliant performance for Team Lagos at the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged “Gateway Games 2024,” as Michael Aiyegbeni clinched gold in the men’s hammer throw.

Aiyegbeni’s victory was a testament to his resilience, as he defied the odds and overcame top contenders from other states.

The Geology graduate expressed immense joy at the opportunity to compete at the festival in Ogun State, describing it as an exceptional experience.

He extended his gratitude to Lagos State for providing him with the platform to showcase his talent at Nigeria’s premier multi-sport event. Aiyegbeni emphasized the profound pride he felt, not just in representing Lagos, but in achieving success on such a grand stage.

“It’s a wonderful feeling, not just doing it for myself. The feeling goes beyond excitement. Doing it on the platform of Lagos State makes it even more exceptional. Thank you very much for this opportunity,” an elated Aiyegbeni stated after his podium finish at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Kuto.

He credited his intense preparation and the technical support from his coach for the victory, noting that his can-do spirit and hard work eventually paid off.

“The competition was very tough, with strong contenders from other states. But at the end of the day, Michael Aiyegbeni for Lagos State made it possible.”

Aiyegbeni highlighted the highly technical nature of hammer throw, emphasizing that it requires total focus.

“Technique is very important. That’s what I focused on. It’s an event that challenges your mind, brain, strength, speed, and power.”

He revealed that he initially took up hammer just for fun, but his growing passion for the sport has blossomed into something remarkable and extraordinary. He now eagerly anticipates future competitions.
