Women’s World Cup: How Falcons Defeated Australia
By Saheed Afolabi
Nigeria came from a goal down to defeat Australia 3-2 at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Uchenna Kanu, Osinachi Ohale and Asisat Oshoala were on target to secure Super Falcons first win at the World Cup.
Australia started the game by pegging Nigeria to their own half and took the lead at the tail end of the first half.
Within seconds to the end of the first 45 minutes, the Falcons responded well with a great finish from Kanu to equal the score line.
The Randy Waldrum tutored side banked majorly on hitting the Aussies on the counterattack as they absorbed pressure in the game.
High flying defender, Ohale popped up to give Nigeria a deserved lead from close range.
Oshoala pace came to play in the 72nd minute as she powered home a great finish from a tight angle to extend the Falcons lead.
Australia reduced the goal deficit with a cool header at the added time of the game but it wasn’t enough to inflict their first defeat at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
