Nonagenarian Couple Wins Mushin Family Week Competition

A nonagenarian couple, Chief and Mrs. Femi Okuyemi has emerged as the winner to represent Mushin LG at the Lagos State 2023 Family Week competition.
Being the basic unit of the social system, the Lagos State Government, in partnership with the 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Areas, organises an annual family week celebration to strengthen family ties and encourage unity among couples and influence parental responsibility for quality child upbringing in the society.
Mushin Local Government under the leadership of Hon. Emmanuel Bamigboye has organised this year’s Family Week and screening, to choose the family that will represent Mushin at the grand finale coming up in the state.
After thorough screening and assessment, in a keenly contested exercise, the family of Chief and Mrs. Femi Okuyemi emerged winner with 80% to beat the families of Alhaji & Mrs. Taiwo Odunsi who came second with 65% and Alhaji & Mrs. Isiaka Emiola who got 56% to get the third position.
The criteria used in the screening exercise included punctuality to the venue, length of the marriage, parental contributions to the achievements and success of their children, and contributions with a commitment of the family to their community.
The council boss who was represented by the Supervisor for Agriculture and Social Services, Mr. Shakiru Oyefolu, commended the families for upholding their marriages.
He stated that the chairman was interested in upholding the tenets of marriage as established by God, pointing out that the programme was targeted at strengthening marriages at the community level and encouraging huge investments in child development and the future of the community.
The family of Pa. Femi Okuyemi who is in his 90s & his wife in her 70s, with over 53 years of marriage, which has produced a Medical Doctor, Accountant, Lawyer, and Insurance expert as children, will be representing Mushin Local Government at the grand finale coming up at the state level.
The 2022 edition of the grand finale organised by Lagos State, awarded Mushin with 3rd position, through its representative, Alhaji & Mrs. Tunde Okuwobi family, who came home with the Bronze medal.
While giving the vote of thanks, the Head of Agriculture and Social Services Department, Mrs. Aderonke Ogundiran, thanked all the families who participated in the celebration and screening exercise.
She reiterated that the programme was aimed at encouraging couples to stay together and protect their marriages for the success of their children in the future.
The event, which took place at the council secretariat at Palm Avenue, had many families in attendance with management and staff of Mushin Local Government.
