The prestigious Soccer Queens Cup have been postponed to a later date according to a Press release issued by the convener and popular women’s football advocate, Moses Bako.
A copy of the press release made available to our correspondence says the Soccer Queens Cup was postponed because of the annual National Youth Games coming up in Asaba and most importantly the Nigeria General elections in February.
He added that due to the rigorous campaigns and agitations in some states, they don’t want to expose the young players to danger since the teams of the tournament will be picked across the 6 geopolitical zones in Nigeria.
“Soccer Queens Cup slated for February 7th – 14th February 2023 has been postponed till a later date because of the National Youth Games coming up in February 8-18, 2023 in Asaba, Delta state and most especially the General Elections coming up on the 25th of February 2023.
“Due to the campaigns and agitations, some states can be volatile and We don’t want to expose young players to danger since the tournament cuts across the 6 geopolitical zones in Nigeria.”
The maiden edition of the Soccer Queens Cup was held last year as Imo Strikers Queens emerged champions.
Through the Soccer Queens Cup, prolific goal scorer, Harmony Achifula was discovered as she emerged the highest goal scorer of the tournament, she didn’t stop there as she also emerged the highest goal scorer at the NWFL Nationwide for the 2021/2022 session.
Harmony Achifula goal scoring prowess secured promotion for her team Imo Strikers Queens to the NWFL Championship as they are set for crunchy competition in the second tier of women’s football in Nigeria.
